Dad’s Honohono Orchids

DADS HONOHONO ORCHIDS ✨

This print is in honor of my dad, Richard Marzo. I talk a lot about my childhood at my grandparents home at Maku’u, Puna, Hawaii island. My dad would take us kids with him religiously, every weekend we would be there all of us fishing, swimming, enjoying life. My dad was a hardcore fisherman, like his dad before him. A passion times 10. So a lot of what inspires me is from that time, that place, those memories. As time went by though, the rocks and the shoreline proved to be too much for my dad and he could go fishing less and less, till the point where he just couldn’t go anymore. I’m sure that must’ve been a bummer for him. But in true Richard Marzo fashion, he threw himself into his yard keeping and gardening at home. One day when I flew back home and visited him, I pulled up and saw these beautiful waterfalls of Honohono orchids covering the Hapuu trees in his front yard. It was strikingly beautiful. I didn’t know my dad was capable of creating such BEAUTY. I spent some time among the Honohono orchids, simply taking it all in, thinking how much love, care, and passion went into them. I was in awe. Of him.

This Honohono orchid print has lived in my dropbox for some time. It was always a print for my dad, and I thought how fitting to bring this print out to celebrate Father’s Day. It reminds me that life and the people in it changes with the seasons, but there is always beauty to celebrate in each. Happy Father’s Day dad.
