In a world where most clothing is produced thousands of miles away, choosing to manufacture locally is not always the easiest path. In Hawaiʻi especially, the challenges are real — higher labor costs, limited manufacturing facilities, and a shrinking number of skilled sewing teams across the islands.
But despite these challenges, we continue to make some of our Kahulaleʻa pieces right here in Hawaiʻi.
For us, it has never been just about production. It’s about people, place, and preserving something meaningful.
Hawaiʻi once had a vibrant garment industry. For decades, skilled makers across the islands created aloha wear that carried the spirit of Hawaiʻi to the world. These garments were not only clothing — they were expressions of culture, artistry, and craftsmanship.
Today, much of that industry has faded. But the artisans who remain carry with them generations of knowledge and skill. Every time we produce locally, we are supporting those hands and helping keep that legacy alive.
Producing in Hawaiʻi often means working in smaller batches. While this can be more expensive and complex from a business standpoint, it also allows us to slow down and be intentional with what we create.
Instead of mass production, we focus on pieces that feel considered and meaningful. Garments that tell a story — of the ʻāina, the places that inspire our prints, and the lives we have lived here.
Every garment produced locally represents more than clothing.
When a piece is made locally, its impact reaches beyond our studio.
It supports local pattern makers, cutters, sewers, and small production teams who continue to practice their craft here in the islands. These are the people who help transform a design from an idea on paper into something tangible that can be worn and cherished.
For us, continuing to produce some of our pieces here is a way of investing back into the community that has supported Kahulaleʻa since the very beginning.
The truth is that producing entirely in Hawaiʻi is incredibly difficult for many small brands. The costs are high, and the resources are limited. Like many local companies, we balance production between Hawaiʻi and other trusted partners so we can continue to grow sustainably.
But whenever possible, we choose to bring pieces home to be made here.
Because every garment produced locally represents more than clothing. It represents a commitment to craft, to community, and to honoring the place that inspires everything we do.
