The inspiration for our Pua Melia print begins in Puna, in the backyard of my tutu’s home, where pua melia trees bloomed in an array of colors. Their branches stretched across the yard, filling the air with fragrance and creating a place of beauty that became woven into some of my most cherished childhood memories.
Each tree seemed to carry its own personality. Soft whites, vibrant yellows, delicate pinks, and rich sunset hues would bloom throughout the year, creating a living tapestry of color. As children, we gathered the blossoms to make lei, admired their fragrance, and found joy in the simple beauty that surrounded us.
For me, those trees came to represent more than just a flower. They became a symbol of home, family, and the memories created in the places that shape us. The sight of pua melia blooming beneath the warm Puna sun remains one of my strongest connections to my tutu and the place she lovingly cared for.
Every Pua Melia print we create at Kahulaleʻa is inspired by and honors that special space. While each design may take on a different artistic expression, the story remains the same—a tribute to the backyard where generations gathered, where blossoms of many colors flourished, and where some of my earliest memories of Hawaiʻi’s beauty were formed.
This 2026 Pua Melia artwork celebrates those enduring connections. It is a reminder that the places we love continue to bloom within us, carrying forward the memories, stories, and aloha of those who came before. Like the blossoms that return season after season, those connections remain, coloring our lives in ways both seen and unseen.
